  • The Alternate Access Process ensures clients can still link to ATO services if myGov access fails.

Australia’s tax‑filing landscape has shifted significantly in recent years, with a growing reliance on digital platforms and online tools that streamline the process of completing your tax return. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) now supports a variety of web‑based systems, and private software providers offer user‑friendly alternatives tailored to different taxpayer needs.

Why use tax software and online tools?

Firstly, online tax‑lodgement tools save considerable time and reduce manual effort. For example, the ATO’s “myTax” service, accessible via the government’s myGov portal, allows users to lodge returns online with pre‑filled information from employers and financial institutions. Private software platforms automate the capture of income and expenses, flag deductions and offer direct lodgement. Property investors using tax software report fewer manual steps, streamlined record-keeping and maximised deductible amounts.

Secondly, accuracy and compliance are enhanced. Tax software integrates features such as deduction detection, receipt storage, bank feed automation, and error‑checking, which helps safeguard against mistakes and audit triggers. For small businesses, software like QuickBooks enables automatic categorisation of expenses, tax code tracking, and seamless lodgement of Business Activity Statements (BAS).

Thirdly, convenience and accessibility have grown. With apps and cloud‑based platforms, individuals and business owners can upload receipts via smartphone, access tax data anytime, anywhere, and avoid stacks of paper. Mobile tax apps let users file their return instantly and securely from a smartphone.

The role of myGov in simplified tax filing

myGov is a secure website operated by Services Australia that provides access to a range of government services in one place, including ATO online services. Tax Help clients are encouraged to have a myGov account linked to ATO services. If a client does not have one, they can create an account using a unique email address they personally own and link it to the ATO. Tax Help volunteers should not create email addresses for clients. Clients need access to their email to receive the myGov authentication code.

Most clients can link their myGov account using information they already have. If additional support is needed, the Tax Help hotline can provide a myGov linking code after verifying the client’s identity. For step-by-step guidance, ATO resources provide detailed instructions on creating and linking a myGov account.

Alternate Access Process (AAP)

The Alternate Access Process is a backup pathway to ATO online services. It should only be used when a client is unable to create or access a myGov account or link it to ATO services. Tax Help volunteers receive additional instructions about using the AAP before the program begins.

Key benefits

  • Time savings: Reduces manual form-filling and data entry.
  • Better deduction opportunities: Spot deductions such as depreciation, home-office claims, or mileage.
  • Improved organisation: Digital storage of receipts, bank feeds, and categorised expenses.
  • Enhanced compliance: Reduces errors, late lodgements, or misclassifications of income/expenses.
  • Accessibility: Mobile apps and cloud tools allow working on tax returns from anywhere.

Final thoughts

Using tax software and online tools, together with myGov access or AAP if needed, makes tax filing in Australia more manageable. Individuals, freelancers, investors, and small business owners can save time, improve accuracy, and lodge returns securely. By combining prefill services with intuitive software features, taxpayers can simplify the process while ensuring compliance with ATO requirements.
