With its stock down 11% over the past three months, it is easy to disregard Zoom Communications (NASDAQ:ZM). But if you pay close attention, you might find that its key financial indicators look quite decent, which could mean that the stock could potentially rise in the long-term given how markets usually reward more resilient long-term fundamentals. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Zoom Communications' ROE today. ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments. Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit. How Is ROE Calculated? The formula for return on equity is: Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Zoom Communications is: 11% = US$1.0b ÷ US$8.9b (Based on the trailing twelve months to January 2025). The 'return' is the yearly profit. That means that for every $1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated $0.11 in profit. See our latest analysis for Zoom Communications What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth? Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features. Zoom Communications' Earnings Growth And 11% ROE To begin with, Zoom Communications seems to have a respectable ROE. Even so, when compared with the average industry ROE of 14%, we aren't very excited. Zoom Communications was still able to see a decent net income growth of 10% over the past five years. Therefore, the growth in earnings could probably have been caused by other variables. Such as - high earnings retention or an efficient management in place. However, not to forget, the company does have a decent ROE to begin with, just that it is lower than the industry average. So this also provides some context to the earnings growth seen by the company. We then compared Zoom Communications' net income growth with the industry and found that the company's growth figure is lower than the average industry growth rate of 21% in the same 5-year period, which is a bit concerning. Story Continues NasdaqGS:ZM Past Earnings Growth April 30th 2025 The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth.
