Q2 Earnings Highs And Lows: Semtech (NASDAQ:SMTC) Vs The Rest Of The Semiconductor Manufacturing Stocks As the Q2 earnings season wraps, let’s dig into this quarter’s best and worst performers in the semiconductor manufacturing industry, including Semtech (NASDAQ:SMTC) and its peers. The semiconductor industry is driven by demand for advanced electronic products like smartphones, PCs, servers, and data storage. The need for technologies like artificial intelligence, 5G networks, and smart cars is also creating the next wave of growth for the industry. Keeping up with this dynamism requires new tools that can design, fabricate, and test chips at ever smaller sizes and more complex architectures, creating a dire need for semiconductor capital manufacturing equipment. The 14 semiconductor manufacturing stocks we track reported a strong Q2. As a group, revenues beat analysts’ consensus estimates by 1.9% while next quarter’s revenue guidance was 2.7% below. Inflation progressed towards the Fed's 2% goal recently, leading the Fed to reduce its policy rate by 50bps (half a percent or 0.5%) in September 2024. This is the first cut in four years. While CPI (inflation) readings have been supportive lately, employment measures have bordered on worrisome. The markets will be debating whether this rate cut's timing (and more potential ones in 2024 and 2025) is ideal for supporting the economy or a bit too late for a macro that has already cooled too much. In light of this news, semiconductor manufacturing stocks have held steady with share prices up 1.8% on average since the latest earnings results.
