Metcash Limited (ASX:MTS) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 27th of August to A$0.095. This makes the dividend yield 4.5%, which is above the industry average. AI is about to change healthcare. These 20 stocks are working on everything from early diagnostics to drug discovery. The best part - they are all under $10bn in marketcap - there is still time to get in early. Metcash's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Metcash's earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business. Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 18.7% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 64% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.ASX:MTS Historic Dividend July 11th 2025 Check out our latest analysis for Metcash Metcash's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency It's comforting to see that Metcash has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. Due to this, we are a little bit cautious about the dividend consistency over a full economic cycle. The annual payment during the last 8 years was A$0.045 in 2017, and the most recent fiscal year payment was A$0.18. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 19% per annum over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious. The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. We are encouraged to see that Metcash has grown earnings per share at 12% per year over the past five years. Since earnings per share is growing at an acceptable rate, and the payout policy is balanced, we think the company is positioning itself well to grow earnings and dividends in the future. We Really Like Metcash's Dividend Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock. Story Continues Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for Metcash that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Is Metcash not quite the opportunity you were looking for?
