There wouldn't be many who think Freelancer Limited's (ASX:FLN) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.9x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Professional Services industry in Australia is similar at about 1.7x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S. View our latest analysis for Freelancer ps-multiple-vs-industry How Freelancer Has Been Performing For instance, Freelancer's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour. Although there are no analyst estimates available for Freelancer, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow. Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Freelancer? Freelancer's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry. Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 3.1%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 3.9% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time. In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 17% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective. With this in mind, we find it worrying that Freelancer's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh on the share price eventually. The Final Word Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects. Our look at Freelancer revealed its shrinking revenues over the medium-term haven't impacted the P/S as much as we anticipated, given the industry is set to grow. Even though it matches the industry, we're uncomfortable with the current P/S ratio, as this dismal revenue performance is unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
