For us, stock picking is in large part the hunt for the truly magnificent stocks. Mistakes are inevitable, but a single top stock pick can cover any losses, and so much more. Take, for example, the Zip Co Limited (ASX:ZIP) share price, which skyrocketed 572% over three years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 52% gain in the last three months. It really delights us to see such great share price performance for investors.

The past week has proven to be lucrative for Zip Co investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's three-year performance.

Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Zip Co became profitable within the last three years. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Zip Co shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 77% over one year. That certainly beats the loss of about 7% per year over the last half decade. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Zip Co has 2 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.

Zip Co is not the only stock insiders are buying. So take a peek at this freelist of small cap companies at attractive valuations which insiders have been buying.
