We think that it's fair to say that the possibility of finding fantastic multi-year winners is what motivates many investors. Not every pick can be a winner, but when you pick the right stock, you can win big. Take, for example, the Mader Group Limited (ASX:MAD) share price, which skyrocketed 562% over three years. It's also good to see the share price up 16% over the last quarter. We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance! Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business. Check out our latest analysis for Mader Group While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement. Mader Group was able to grow its EPS at 27% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. In comparison, the 88% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did three years ago. That's not necessarily surprising considering the three-year track record of earnings growth. You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values). earnings-per-share-growth We know that Mader Group has improved its bottom line lately, but is it going to grow revenue? This freereport showing analyst revenue forecasts should help you figure out if the EPS growth can be sustained. What About Dividends? As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Mader Group's TSR for the last 3 years was 609%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return. A Different Perspective Pleasingly, Mader Group's total shareholder return last year was 47%. That includes the value of the dividend. That falls short of the 92% it has made, for shareholders, each year, over three years. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Mader Group better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Mader Group (of which 1 doesn't sit too well with us!) you should know about.
