It might seem bad, but the worst that can happen when you buy a stock (without leverage) is that its share price goes to zero. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. To wit, the Perseus Mining Limited (ASX:PRU) share price has flown 243% in the last three years. That sort of return is as solid as granite. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 42% gain in the last three months. This could be related to the recent financial results, released recently - you can catch up on the most recent data by reading our company report. After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals. Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit. There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time. Perseus Mining was able to grow its EPS at 28% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. In comparison, the 51% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did three years ago. It is quite common to see investors become enamoured with a business, after a few years of solid progress. You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).ASX:PRU Earnings Per Share Growth September 23rd 2025 We know that Perseus Mining has improved its bottom line lately, but is it going to grow revenue? As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Perseus Mining's TSR for the last 3 years was 265%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence! A Different Perspective We're pleased to report that Perseus Mining shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 85% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 30% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
