For many, the main point of investing in the stock market is to achieve spectacular returns. And highest quality companies can see their share prices grow by huge amounts. To wit, the Mueller Industries, Inc. (NYSE:MLI) share price has soared 533% over five years. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. It's down 3.6% in the last seven days. Anyone who held for that rewarding ride would probably be keen to talk about it. Although Mueller Industries has shed US$326m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns. There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Over half a decade, Mueller Industries managed to grow its earnings per share at 43% a year. This EPS growth is remarkably close to the 45% average annual increase in the share price. This indicates that investor sentiment towards the company has not changed a great deal. Indeed, it would appear the share price is reacting to the EPS. The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).NYSE:MLI Earnings Per Share Growth March 31st 2025 Dive deeper into Mueller Industries' key metrics by checking this interactive graph of Mueller Industries's earnings, revenue and cash flow. What About Dividends? When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Mueller Industries' TSR for the last 5 years was 579%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence! A Different Perspective We're pleased to report that Mueller Industries shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 45% over one year. And that does include the dividend. However, that falls short of the 47% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term.
