Lundin Gold Inc.'s (TSE:LUG) strong earnings report was rewarded with a positive stock price move. Our analysis found some more factors that we think are good for shareholders. View our latest analysis for Lundin Gold TSX:LUG Earnings and Revenue History March 1st 2025 Zooming In On Lundin Gold's Earnings In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF. Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth. Over the twelve months to December 2024, Lundin Gold recorded an accrual ratio of -0.17. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. To wit, it produced free cash flow of US$580m during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of US$426.1m. Lundin Gold's free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see. Having said that, there is more to the story. We can see that unusual items have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore the accrual ratio. That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates. The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit Lundin Gold's profit was reduced by unusual items worth US$237m in the last twelve months, and this helped it produce high cash conversion, as reflected by its unusual items. This is what you'd expect to see where a company has a non-cash charge reducing paper profits. It's never great to see unusual items costing the company profits, but on the upside, things might improve sooner rather than later. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. If Lundin Gold doesn't see those unusual expenses repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to increase over the coming year. Story Continues Our Take On Lundin Gold's Profit Performance In conclusion, both Lundin Gold's accrual ratio and its unusual items suggest that its statutory earnings are probably reasonably conservative. After considering all this, we reckon Lundin Gold's statutory profit probably understates its earnings potential!
