LondonMetric Property (LON:LMP) has had a great run on the share market with its stock up by a significant 11% over the last three months. But the company's key financial indicators appear to be differing across the board and that makes us question whether or not the company's current share price momentum can be maintained. In this article, we decided to focus on LondonMetric Property's ROE. Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. How Do You Calculate Return On Equity? Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula: Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity So, based on the above formula, the ROE for LondonMetric Property is: 8.5% = UK£351m ÷ UK£4.1b (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025). The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. That means that for every £1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated £0.09 in profit. Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes. LondonMetric Property's Earnings Growth And 8.5% ROE At first glance, LondonMetric Property's ROE doesn't look very promising. Although a closer study shows that the company's ROE is higher than the industry average of 7.0% which we definitely can't overlook. But then again, seeing that LondonMetric Property's net income shrunk at a rate of 8.8% in the past five years, makes us think again. Bear in mind, the company does have a slightly low ROE. It is just that the industry ROE is lower. Hence, this goes some way in explaining the shrinking earnings. As a next step, we compared LondonMetric Property's performance with the industry and found thatLondonMetric Property's performance is depressing even when compared with the industry, which has shrunk its earnings at a rate of 1.3% in the same period, which is a slower than the company. Moreover, LondonMetric Property has been paying dividends for at least ten years or more suggesting that management must have perceived that the shareholders prefer dividends over earnings growth. Looking at the current analyst consensus data, we can see that the company's future payout ratio is expected to rise to 93% over the next three years. Regardless, the ROE is not expected to change much for the company despite the higher expected payout ratio. Conclusion Overall, we have mixed feelings about LondonMetric Property. Primarily, we are disappointed to see a lack of growth in earnings even in spite of a moderate ROE. Bear in mind, the company reinvests a small portion of its profits, which explains the lack of growth. With that said, we studied the latest analyst forecasts and found that while the company has shrunk its earnings in the past, analysts expect its earnings to grow in the future.
