Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes. Loblaw Companies' Earnings Growth And 20% ROE At first glance, Loblaw Companies seems to have a decent ROE. Especially when compared to the industry average of 13% the company's ROE looks pretty impressive. This probably laid the ground for Loblaw Companies' moderate 16% net income growth seen over the past five years. Moreover, Loblaw Companies is determined to keep sharing its profits with shareholders which we infer from its long history of paying a dividend for at least ten years. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company is expected to keep paying out approximately 23% of its profits over the next three years. As a result, Loblaw Companies' ROE is not expected to change by much either, which we inferred from the analyst estimate of 22% for future ROE. Conclusion On the whole, we feel that Loblaw Companies' performance has been quite good. Specifically, we like that the company is reinvesting a huge chunk of its profits at a high rate of return. This of course has caused the company to see substantial growth in its earnings.
