The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. To wit, the Fonix Mobile plc (LON:FNX) share price is 16% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market decline of around 1.9% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! We'll need to follow Fonix Mobile for a while to get a better sense of its share price trend, since it hasn't been listed for particularly long. So let's assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 1 year and see if they've moved in lock-step with shareholder returns. Check out our latest analysis for Fonix Mobile In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Fonix Mobile was able to grow EPS by 12% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 16% increase in the share price. This indicates that the market is now more optimistic about the stock. The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers). earnings-per-share-growth It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here.. What About Dividends? It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Fonix Mobile the TSR over the last 1 year was 20%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence! A Different Perspective It's nice to see that Fonix Mobile shareholders have gained 20% over the last year, including dividends. We regret to report that the share price is down 7.7% over ninety days. Shorter term share price moves often don't signify much about the business itself. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
