Many eBay Inc. (NASDAQ:EBAY) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more. While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. This technology could replace computers: discover the 20 stocks are working to make quantum computing a reality. eBay Insider Transactions Over The Last Year Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the CEO, President & Director, Jamie Iannone, for US$1.4m worth of shares, at about US$69.83 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$71.58, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 3.4% of Jamie Iannone's holding. Insiders in eBay didn't buy any shares in the last year. In total, insiders sold US$1.5m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain. Insider Ownership Of eBay Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that eBay insiders own 0.3% of the company, worth about US$95m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders. Story Continues What Might The Insider Transactions At eBay Tell Us? Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. Looking to the last twelve months, our data doesn't show any insider buying. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. We'd practice some caution before buying!
