Fonix Mobile plc (LON:FNX) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 30th of November to £0.045. Based on this payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 3.2%, which is fairly typical for the industry. See our latest analysis for Fonix Mobile Fonix Mobile's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. Before making this announcement, Fonix Mobile was paying out quite a large proportion of both earnings and cash flow, with the dividend being 132% of cash flows. Paying out such a high proportion of cash flows certainly exposes the company to cutting the dividend if cash flows were to reduce. Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 27.5% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 43%, which would make us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend, despite the levels currently being quite high. historic-dividend Fonix Mobile Is Still Building Its Track Record The dividend hasn't seen any major cuts in the past, but the company has only been paying a dividend for 2 years, which isn't that long in the grand scheme of things. The dividend has gone from an annual total of £0.034 in 2020 to the most recent total annual payment of £0.065. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 38% a year over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed. The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. However, things aren't all that rosy. Fonix Mobile's EPS has fallen by approximately 24% per year during the past five years. A sharp decline in earnings per share is not great from from a dividend perspective. Even conservative payout ratios can come under pressure if earnings fall far enough. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited. The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Fonix Mobile will make a great income stock. The payments are bit high to be considered sustainable, and the track record isn't the best. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock. Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for Fonix Mobile that investors need to be conscious of moving forward.
