Evolution Mining (ASX:EVN) has had a great run on the share market with its stock up by a significant 50% over the last three months. Given the company's impressive performance, we decided to study its financial indicators more closely as a company's financial health over the long-term usually dictates market outcomes. In this article, we decided to focus on Evolution Mining's ROE. Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes. Evolution Mining's Earnings Growth And 19% ROE To begin with, Evolution Mining seems to have a respectable ROE. On comparing with the average industry ROE of 9.4% the company's ROE looks pretty remarkable. This certainly adds some context to Evolution Mining's decent 19% net income growth seen over the past five years. This suggests that its dividend is well covered, and given the decent growth seen by the company, it looks like management is reinvesting its earnings efficiently. Moreover, Evolution Mining is determined to keep sharing its profits with shareholders which we infer from its long history of paying a dividend for at least ten years. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company's future payout ratio is expected to rise to 47% over the next three years. However, the company's ROE is not expected to change by much despite the higher expected payout ratio. Conclusion In total, we are pretty happy with Evolution Mining's performance. Specifically, we like that the company is reinvesting a huge chunk of its profits at a high rate of return. This of course has caused the company to see substantial growth in its earnings. Having said that, the company's earnings growth is expected to slow down, as forecasted in the current analyst estimates.
