It is hard to get excited after looking at Lumine Group's (CVE:LMN) recent performance, when its stock has declined 41% over the past three months. However, stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financials over the long term, which in this case look pretty respectable. In this article, we decided to focus on Lumine Group's ROE. Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments. The formula for ROE is: Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Lumine Group is: 13% = US$99m ÷ US$767m (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025). The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. Another way to think of that is that for every CA$1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn CA$0.13 in profit. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features. Lumine Group's Earnings Growth And 13% ROE To start with, Lumine Group's ROE looks acceptable. And on comparing with the industry, we found that the the average industry ROE is similar at 11%. However, while Lumine Group has a pretty respectable ROE, its five year net income decline rate was 14% . So, there might be some other aspects that could explain this. Such as, the company pays out a huge portion of its earnings as dividends, or is faced with competitive pressures. So there could be some other explanations in that regard. For instance, the company's business may be deteriorating. Summary On the whole, we do feel that Lumine Group has some positive attributes. However, given the high ROE and high profit retention, we would expect the company to be delivering strong earnings growth, but that isn't the case here. This suggests that there might be some external threat to the business, that's hampering its growth. Moreover, after studying current analyst estimates, we discovered that the company's earnings are expected to continue to shrink in the future.
