Whitehaven Coal Limited (ASX: WHC)

Whitehaven Coal Limited is an Australia-based coal producer that develops and operates coal mines in New South Wales and Queensland. It has three primary segments: open-cut operations, underground operations, and coal trading & blending.

Recommendation Rationale – SELL at AUD 6.140

  • Surpassed Resistance 1 Level: WHC has breached the Resistance 1 level highlighted in our 5 June 2025 note, with the 14-day RSI around 64.41 indicating limited upside potential and nearing overbought territory.
  • Declining Production and Sales Volumes: In Q3 FY25, WHC's ROM coal production decreased by 5% quarter-on-quarter to 9.2 million tonnes, and total equity sales of produced coal dropped 20% compared to the previous quarter. Both Queensland and New South Wales operations saw production and sales declines, with Queensland sales down 26% and NSW sales down 10% quarter-on-quarter. This indicates a weakening operational momentum.
  • Overvalued Multiples: On a forward 12-month basis - key valuation multiples (EV/EBITDA, EV/Sales, P/E and Price/Cash Flow) are higher than average of the Coal industry.
  • Reduced Coal Prices and Revenue Pressure: In Q3 FY25, Queensland metallurgical coal prices realized were at 79% of the PLV HCC Index, suggesting pricing pressure. Although NSW thermal coal prices were relatively stronger, the overall uncertain pricing environment poses risks to revenue stability.

WHC Daily Chart

Valuation Methodology: Price/Earnings Approach (FY Jun'26E) (Illustrative)

The stock might trade at a slight premium to its peers, considering the reduction in per unit production cost to below guidance in H1FY25, revenue, EBITDA and production growth in H1FY25, the company's transformation to a metallurgical coal producer.

For conducting valuation, the following peers have been considered: Paladin Energy Ltd (ASX: PDN), Boss Energy Ltd (ASX: BOE), Mineral Resources Ltd (ASX: MIN).

Considering the rally in share price movement, current trading level, and risks associated, the share price can witness resistance at the current levels. Hence, a ‘Sell’ recommendation is given on the stock at the current market price of AUD 6.140, as of 11 July 2025 at 10:06 AM AEST.

Markets are trading in a highly volatile zone currently due to certain macro-economic issues and geopolitical issues prevailing geopolitical tensions. Therefore, it is prudent to follow a cautious approach while investing.
