The main aim of stock picking is to find the market-beating stocks. But the main game is to find enough winners to more than offset the losers At this point some shareholders may be questioning their investment in STV Group plc (LON:STVG), since the last five years saw the share price fall 23%. On the other hand the share price has bounced 5.4% over the last week. So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress. View our latest analysis for STV Group In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS). While the share price declined over five years, STV Group actually managed to increase EPS by an average of 5.2% per year. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past. Generally speaking we'd expect to see stronger share price increases on the back of sustained EPS growth, but other metrics may hold a clue to why the share price performance is relatively modest. The most recent dividend was actually lower than it was in the past, so that may have sent the share price lower. You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values). earnings-and-revenue-growth We know that STV Group has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our freereport on how its financial position has changed over time. What About Dividends? As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for STV Group the TSR over the last 5 years was -7.9%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence! A Different Perspective We regret to report that STV Group shareholders are down 16% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 3.1%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 1.5% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand STV Group better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance.
